These projects reflect global solidarities, long-term scholar-activist relationships, and Dr. Fish’s wider connection to global artisans.  Resources from these projects are invested to support local artists, migrant workers, and refugees worldwide.

Women's Lives in Lockdown: Heartworks Stories Project

When South Africa confronted the depth of the corona virus, women in the Heartworks Stitching Club began documenting their experience through original embroidery depictions of their lives under lockdown. The women artists live in communities that face the greatest risks of infection. Their hand-stitched journals are created as intimate lenses into their lives and collective stories. Together, they form an exhibition that will be featured as an artistic response to this global crisis.

These original pieces are available for acquisition. All investments will go directly to the women artists in South Africa.

Most images are 60 x 40 cm. The two square images with the white background are 45 x 45 cm.

Beloved Beadwork celebrates Africa design, the aesthetics of adornment, and global women’s solidarity. Each piece is hand created as an original expression that merges structural elements of both jewelry and geometry.  This organization is run completely by women, with an unwavering commitment to labor rights, social protections, and equity.  Dr. Fish has worked with Beloved Beadwork since its origins in 2009, and draws upon its principles in her teaching and global immersion courses.
